What is an AI harness?
If that phrase made your eyes glaze over, you’re not alone — nobody in a sales room knew what it meant either. Here’s the plain-English answer: what a harness is, what it isn’t, and why it decides whether the AI you’re being sold actually gets work done.
The short answer
The model is the engine. The harness is everything wrapped around it.
An AI harness is the layer that wraps around an AI model — giving it the data, the tools, and the rules to do real work.
An AI model — the engine behind tools like ChatGPT and Claude — is good at exactly one thing: producing language. On its own, it can’t read your ERP, doesn’t know your permissions, can’t query your records, and won’t show you where its answers came from. The harness is the layer that fixes that.
